Dear Witherspooners,

The Witherspoon Society has a unique opportunity to strengthen our voice and to grow in 2002. We have been offered a $10,000 Challenge Grant targeted at hiring a professional to staff the Society. We need to meet this challenge with $10,000 from you, our members and friends.

This is a direct appeal to you for gifts towards that $10,000 goal.

The Executive Committee members have pledged participation toward this goal and urge you to join us. It is encouraging to have this offer now because we have an excellent candidate who is excited about the opportunity to work with us.

The timing of this challenge grant has special meaning for the Society coming as it does on the 35th anniversary of the Confession of 1967 - the document upon which we have based Witherspoon's mission statement. As part of an anniversary celebration we are designing consultations and forums to discuss the key themes of a confession that calls us to reconciliation with God and one another. The Confession of 1967 speaks to the divisions facing our denomination and the spiral of violence plaguing our world. It serves as a powerful reminder that our faith compels us to live as God's reconciling community.

We held a preliminary consultation in Claremont, California last May and are planning a second, major conference for February 4-5, 2002 at the Stony Point Conference Center in New York. This second effort is being organized in conjunction with the Third Way Project of Hudson River Presbytery and the Synod of the Northeast.

Professional staff will allow us to facilitate workshops like this throughout the country. Staff can also maintain connections, nurture local chapters, staff General Assembly events, and provide resources and ideas that keep an organization and its programs growing.

We hope you will agree that the Witherspoon Society's impact in church and society would be greater if we can hire staff and that you will want very much to share in raising the first $10,000 to qualify for the challenge opportunity offered to us. Your generous participation will quickly open the door for us to hire our candidate.

We wish you the love and joy of the season,

Jane Hanna
