We recently took note of a
web site which offers support and understanding to parents who may
be having difficulties in dealing with the fact that a child of theirs
in gay or lesbian.
We're heard from visitors who have suggested two
helpful books and an organization. Thanks to all of them!
If you have more resources to suggest, please
send a note.
Here's one book suggestion:
Marcy Henrikson, former moderator of the Synod of
Lincoln Trails, has recently written Our Daughter Martha: A Family
Struggles with Coming Out. The note continues: "I think it's
well written and very honest about all the different reactions she had
through stages of understanding and acceptance as a parent, and how she
related at various times with her daughter, other family members, the
church, friends and strangers. I would recommend it for parents of GLBT
- and for pastors of those parents."
Here's another:
Witherspooner Hedy Lodwick suggests a book written by the
mother of a gay son. The parents "were active
Presbyterians but were shunned by their church when their high school
son identified as gay. He took such abuse from his high school that his
parents removed him from that school and his mother taught him at home.
The parents have since been welcomed in an Episcopal Church. The last I
heard, the son still wanted nothing to do with a church." The book:
A Journey to Moriah, by Rhea Murray. Published by Banta &
Pool Literary Properties, LLC, 1020 Greenwood Avenue, Bloomington,
Indiana 47401. E-Mail: writerpool@aol.com
And a Florida organization and its web site:
Finally, another suggests www.projectyes.org,
an organization in Miami, Florida with which he and his wife worked. The
group "is working with teachers, clergy, parents, and community
leaders to make the world safer for GLBT children."
