Debate continues on use of religious
groups to provide social services with government funding
[1-26-01]
The New
York Times reported on Jan. 25, 2001, that President George W. Bush
continues to emphasize his commitment to the distribution of government
aid through faith-based organizations. He acknowledged there will be
objections, but intends to pursue this new program. Some people, out of
their own religious commitments, have expressed concern about the
exclusivism implied by the Christian references during Bush's
inauguration, while others see this as a promising way for government to
cooperate with caring religious people.
The report notes that during the campaign Al Gore
seemed as supportive of the use of faith-based organizations as was
George W. Bush.
