A Christian Call for Peace in the Middle East

Churches for Middle East Peace issue "A Christian Call for Peace" in the form of a petition

[12-17-01]

We reported a year ago on a prayer vigil campaign by the group, Churches for Middle East Peace, in which the PC(USA) is an active participant.

This year the group has issued a petition for peace, which you can sign on their web site.  (Or print a copy to circulate it more widely, and mail it to the address provided.)  They will send the signatures to our nation's leaders.

Here is the text of this year's petition:

A Christian Call for Peace

We pray for peace in the Holy Land. We are Christians called to express our concerns for peace in Israel and Palestine.
bulletWe believe that one of the primary outcomes of negotiations in the Middle East must be a viable Palestinian state living in peace alongside the state of Israel. For a Palestinian state to be viable and for Israel to be secure, Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza must end. All Israeli settlement activity in the Occupied Territories must cease.
bulletWe believe in the vision of a shared Jerusalem as the heritage, hope and home of two peoples and three religions. Jerusalem should be a shared, open city -- a sign of peace and a symbol of reconciliation for the Abrahamic faiths.
bulletWe call for an immediate end to the cycle of violence. We support a negotiated agreement for an Israeli-Palestinian-Arab peace based on international law.
bulletWe strongly support the presence of international observers as one immediate means of discouraging further violence between Palestinians and Israelis.
bulletWe urge our country's leaders to do all in their power to prepare the road for a just and durable peace.

To sign the petition, or make a copy to circulate more widely, go to the Churches for Middle East Peace web site.

Another helpful site is provided by the Middle East Forum, which includes material from Church World
Service.
