| Faith groups seek limits on
globalization
[4-19-01]
The UCC Justice
and Peace Ministry has urged people to contact Congress to
oppose the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), an
expansion of NAFTA to cover the whole Western hemisphere with the
very mixed blessings of "free trade." [4-24-01]
As a variety of militant groups prepare to demonstrate in Quebec City at
the free-trade summit slated for April 20-22, others are expressing
similar concerns from deeply religious convictions. One report from
Religion News Service highlights the Catholic, Protestant, and
evangelical groups in Britain that are following up on the successes of
Jubilee 2000 in a new, short-term effort called Drop the Debt.
While
anti-globalization demonstrators will try to cause chaos at the
34-nation Summit of the Americas, blocking moves toward a hemispheric
free-trade zone, the faith-based groups, led by Britains Catholic and
Protestant relief agencies, will be calling for trade that is free but
also still fair to poor nations. The debtor nations see the "free
trade" rules as serving primarily the interests of the West, while
limiting their own exports and harming their domestic economies.
