| Pres. Bush wants faith-based action,
but maybe not this kind
A faith-based environmental movement seems to be growing in response to
Bush's withdrawal from the Kyoto agreement on global warming, and other
such actions
[4-11-01]
The National Council of Churches letter to the
President is seen by a writer in the LA
Times as just one part of a broad religious movement which is
emerging in response to President Bush's withdrawal from the Kyoto
agreement on global warning, as well as other actions apparently
damaging to the environment.
In addition to the letter sent by the National Council of Churches, and
by leaders of mainline Protestant and historic black churches and the
chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, other letters have been
sent by scientists with the Evangelical Environmental Network, the
Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life and the Jewish Council on
Public Affairs, which represents 13 national and 122 local Jewish public
affairs agencies.
Christie Whitman, the new administrator of the Environmental Protection
Agency, is paying attention. In a private memo to Bush, which was later
leaked, she wrote, "For the first time, the world's religious
communities have started to engage in the issue. Their solutions vary
widely, but the fervor of the focus was clear."
