| Members of GAC express concerns about the
ranking of church's mission work
[10/4/00]
Leslie Scanlon, the Louisville reporter for Presbyterian Outlook,
noted after the General Assembly Council meeting that a number of the
participants expressed reservations about what the group had had to do.
Scanlon quotes Adelia Kelso, a pastor from Pearl
River, La., as saying that she is "deeply disturbed" by the
equating of evangelism with church growth, because to her (quoting
mission statesperson D. T. Niles) "evangelism is one beggar telling
another where to find bread and that bread is God's bread and it is
abundant, and you don't have to fight for it."
Former Moderator Douglas Oldenburg expressed concern
that areas such as higher education and theological education, public
policy witness and peacemaking -- to which Presbyterians have long been
committed -- were ranked as "low impact" programs. "All
of these are reasons why I'm a Presbyterian," he said, and
"they came out on the bottom."
