Signs of the Times |
Signs of the Times
[2-25-03]
Pastor and author Duke Robinson has
circulated this note, and has given permission for us to share it here.
A couple notes from your WebWeaver:
 | Some of the signs he reports from the
San Francisco marches may be offensive to some, either by because of their
crude language (but let's face it, war is crude) or because they
are "anti-Bush." And we've already had a few notes of protest about items
posted here, from people who felt that statements making fun of or
scolding the President are inappropriate. Dr. Robinson mentions that in
his note, and we add just this: |
 | The impending war is clearly Mr. Bush's
war, not a commitment of the American people, nor of the American Congress
(except for their forlorn passive acceptance of it), nor of the wider
world. So those who would say No to the war must perforce say No to the
man who is instigating it. |
 | If you're joining a demonstration in the
coming weeks, as many are likely to do, you might find some nice ideas
here for a sign to carry. |
Family and Friends:
At the January and February 2003 massive peace demonstrations in San
Francisco against the Administration's rush to war, most marchers carried a
sign of some sort. Barbara and I found ourselves fascinated by the signs,
and I took pictures of a lot of them.
Many marchers had secondary agendas, and some signs expressed points of view
that you and I may not share. But everyone was there to object to the
Administration's commitment to a potentially horrific nightmare and to call
for a change in plans. In the best of American traditions, they were
exercising their Freedom of Speech.
By enlarging my digital pictures on screen I've developed a list of the
texts of many signs, which you'll find below. I've not included such old
standbys as Peace Now, War is Not good For Children and other Living things,
Give Peace a Chance, etc., or group signs. There were, of course, plenty of
those.
The widespread ridicule of President Bush you'll find in some signs, by the
way, paradoxically testifies, it seems to me, to the marchers' anxiety and
rage over the point to which he has brought us as a nation and to their
celebratory spirit. (They seemed to realize we must make some kind of humor
in the face of what makes us cry.)
These are the more creative signs we saw:
Stop Mad Cowboy Disease
The Asses of Evil (Pictures of Bush, Rice and Rumsfeld)
What Bombs Would Jesus Drop?
Thank you France,
Thank You Germany
Blondes Against Dumb Wars (4 men in drag wearing long blond wigs)
Buck Fush (and, Duck Fubya)

Finally, a homemade one of a sad looking mother of about 45:

Jr. Sgt. USMC Born March 8, 1980 Died ??? |
Our President dismisses the significance of the demonstrators and their
signs. It's true, of course, that we want a president who acts from
conscience and is not influenced by every fad or breeze of opinion. But we
want the president's conscience "informed" and serving the country in tune
with what makes justice and peace.
We believe that preemptive military strikes against dictators we don't like
that will kill thousands of innocent civilians are immoral and
anti-American. We think that the failure to increase and toughen UN
inspections for WOMD is irresponsible. To start a war that may play into the
hands of Osama bin Laden, especially without the support of allies whom
we'll need once the dust has settled, strikes us as plain stupid.
So we are trying to speak up. We've been taking prompts from
moveon.org and will join its Virtual March on
Washington February 26, this Wednesday on the Internet, which includes
calling and faxing and e-mailing the Congress and the President. Cosponsor
of the VMOW is The Win Without War Coalition, a member of
which is the National Council of Churches. For information
and to register to participate "launch" to their website here

Grace and peace,
Duke and Barbara Robinson
